A good chopping board can last a lifetime, and the new solid wood chopping board by Mark Lewis of Lewis Design London is designed to do just that. And to get better with age.
Its construction helps prevent distortion to the oiled wood and holds the board in position whilst allowing a little give between a hard kitchen worktop and the force of a chopping action or cut of a cook’s knife – protecting the chef’s wrists.
Solid timber strips bond together to forming a stable wooden cutting surface. Cork bars along the grooves between board and work surface allow air to circulate underneath the board, offering ventilation.
A side groove is strategically placed to help hold still any items that could roll, such as tomatoes, onions or eggs. It then forms guide when pouring the fruits of your labour – be that diced, sliced or chopped – into a bowl or saucepan, for example.
This work of art chopping board comes in American black walnut or maple:
American Black Walnut Wood
There are many varieties of walnut trees. The American Black Walnut (Juglans nigra) is also known as Eastern Black Walnut or simply American Walnut, and is a sustainable, unthreatened species.
Black walnut wood is durable and tight-grained. It gives a beautiful, smooth, tactile finish, and with a range of fabulous warm colours in its grain, which contains distinctive whorls, waves and curls. From dark chocolate to a dark cream in the grain, this wood looks just as luscious as it sounds.
Furthermore, it ages well, developing a lustrous patina over time, and becoming, if anything, slightly lighter, further revealing the beauty of its grain. (Lighter hardwoods usually darken to do this.) These qualities make it the preferred choice for many top of range furnishings, flooring, gunstocks and kitchen accessories.
Black walnut trees grow throughout eastern United States and the east of Canada, where soil is well drained and temperatures suit its growth. The trees reach maturity at around 150 years old, and it’s for this reason that the wood is so prized. Its price and durability means that it is often found as veneers – but not here! The chopping board is walnut through and through.
This wood, as well as beautiful, is stable, shock resistant, and strong – truly in a class of its own. So much so that Lewis Design London is able to offer a lifetime guarantee on it.
Maple is a hardwood, valued for its decorative qualities – a light creamy colour.
It is amongst the most environmentally sustainable woods and is hugely resistant to wear and tear – one of the hardest domestic woods used in furniture making. These qualities, and its cost, mean that it, like the walnut, is often used as a veneer. But, again like the walnut, not here!
The Lewis Design London chopping board is made of solid end grain maple sections, bonded together forming a stable wooden cutting surface. Well-seasoned before crafting, this strong, hard wood is shock resistant. Its attractive grain is fine and even, adding style with its warm, attractive finish.
Lewis Design London is so confident in this handsome wood’s ability to survive and to age beautifully that it is able to offer a lifetime guarantee on it. Over time, even the palest maple develops a gorgeous patina – think honey, think gold, and you can see why this beautiful wood was the natural choice for the pale wood version of this chopping board.
